This article describes how to use a modified question as a template to alter other questions. In the below example, we have a question asked on a five-point likeability question. We manually added a Bottom 2 Box and Top 2 Box NET to the Coca-Cola question.
Our survey asked the same question for six brands in total. This article contains steps showing how to add the NETs from the Coca-Cola question to all other questions, e.g. Brand attitude:
Requirements
A modified question to use as a template, e.g. a question with renamed, hidden, merged, or recoded categories.
Method
1. Go to Automate > Browse Online Library > Modify Data > Use Question as Template for Modifying Other Questions.
2. Select the question you want to use a template > OK.
3. Select the questions you want to modify using the template> OK.
Q will create a new folder in the Report tree containing tables for each modified question. The folder also contains a Report with a description of the made changes.
Technical Details
Changes are replicated between Pick One and Pick One - Multi questions, or between two Pick Any questions.
The types of changes that can be copied are:
- Renamed categories
- Hidden categories
- Removed categories
- Merged categories and NETs
- Recoded categories
Only questions that have the same set of categories can be modified. If a target question was previously modified (e.g., by making changes to the table or by editing the Value Attributes) it will not be possible to replicate changes.
Q will generate a report describing the changes required for the question to be used. See below for instructions on how to revert changes.
Reverting existing changes
The questions that you choose to modify must start with all of their original labels and values unchanged. If changes were made they must be reverted before the question can be modified using the script.
To revert changes made to a table, right-click on a SUMMARY table for the question and select Revert.
If revert changes made to the Value Attributes:
- Highlight the variable(s) for the question in the Variables and Questions tab.
- Right-click and select Revert to Source.
- Ensure the question has the same Question Type as it did previously.
